Fred Lemuel Davis was born on August 24, 1939, in Wyoming, Michigan. He was the youngest of twelve children born to the union of the late Elder Mack and Minnie Davis.
As a member of Davis Chapel Church of God in Christ. Fred received his early religious education from his parents. Through their spiritual guidance and training, he became well-versed in the Word of God.
Fred attended and graduated from South High School in 1957, where he was the star basketball player and known as “Rookie Davis”. Fred obtained his associate’s degree from Grand Rapids Junior College. However, his ultimate goal was to make it to the NBA.
Fred was gainfully employed at General Motors for 36 years and retired in 1996. He also worked at Oakland University.
Fred was a kind-hearted soul who enjoyed fishing, sports, bowling, playing cards, dancing, and singing. He was a fan of American singer and musician Joe Tex. His friends in Pontiac affectionately called him “Tex”. He was a supportive father and grandfather. He loved encouraging and supporting his sons and grandchildren at their various sporting events. Fred was a sharp dresser with style and charisma and had a reputation for driving luxury cars. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor and was truly the life of every family gathering. This patriarch was known as the “cool uncle." Fred enjoyed simple favorites like popcorn, hot dogs, Burger King Whoppers, fried shrimp, and ice-cold Coca-Colas.
On Sunday evening, October 4, 2026, Fred quietly slipped away into the arms of Jesus. In the picture gallery of life, he leaves to cherish his memory his beloved and devoted wife, Bobby Jean Mathes-Davis; his sons Fred (Pam), Troy (Adrian), and Lance; and daughters Kimberly, Christina, and Carla. Grandchildren: Lance Jr. (Stephanie), Lauren, Armaind, Lakeisha, Troy, Sydni, Sloan, and Dontae. Great-grandchildren: Armarie, Amaya, Emmanuel, and Davina. Two sisters, Hazel Jackson and Ada Woods, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Fred was preceded in death by his brothers Lewis, Malcome, and George, and sisters Dolores, Quettia, Violet, Mary, Audrey, and Lola.
